Caspian Sea Week: a cleaning action was held on the coastline of Sumgait beach
A coastal cleaning campaign was held on the beach, which is located in Jorat settlement of Sumgayit city, within the framework of the "Caspian Sea Week" celebrated in our country in connection with World Maritime Day. IDEA Public Union and the "Ecology and Soil Science" faculty of the Baku State University jointly organized it with the support of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and "Tamiz Shahar" OJSC.
In addition to more than 300 students of the Baku State University, representatives and volunteers of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources also actively participated in the clean-up event.
During the campaign, more than three hectares of coastline were cleaned of plastic and other waste and handed over to the Balakhani solid household waste sorting plant.
The purpose of the event is to prevent pollution of the coastal areas with domestic waste, to increase the role of public in improving the ecological condition of the Caspian Sea and the coastal zone.
It should be noted that World Maritime Day was approved by the decision adopted by the United Nations in 1978 in order to focus the attention of the world community on protection of water bodies and their bio-resources. Since that year, the last week of September is celebrated as World Maritime Day every year.
The cleaning campaign serves to protect the ecological purity of the sea, to protect its resources, and at the same time to educate the public. IDEA Public Union calls everyone to protect the shores of the Caspian Sea from pollution and to be united in protecting its resources.
